LifeCycle works by shredding the wet products to break them down into their component parts and then compressing them to remove the liquid. Any foreign objects are removed and we then chemically treat the waste so that it maintains a stable structure when we make bales of it to be used as RDF. Our process has a worldwide patent.

Why LifeCycle is
great news for our customers

Most of our business customers are genuinely concerned that they minimise their impact on the environment. Lifecycle will benefit all our hygiene waste customers. Converting the hygiene waste products into a highly efficient fuel in the form of RDF, instead of sending them to landfill, helps our customers to achieve their environmental targets.

LifeCycle also makes financial sense.
Customers sending hygiene waste products to landfill, face increasingly high costs because of the need to hit the UK’s environmental targets.

LifeCycle means that we can divert from landfill
Waste products can be diverted away from landfill and process them in a more economically efficient way.

The benefits of LifeCycle

We all produce all sorts of human waste throughout our lives. It’s a natural function of being human. Hygiene products (sanitary and incontinence products and nappies) bring fantastic benefits to everyone, by giving us the freedom to continue with our lives. They’re an essential part of our everyday lives but disposing of them has always been an issue.

The waste products are wet and unhygienic - we may not like to think about it but we need to, because we all contribute at some point in our lives.

It’s everyone’s waste and everyone’s issue.

Disposing of hygenie waste has been expensive and environmentally unfriendly - until now

With LifeCycle, for the first time, we have a choice. We can enjoy all the benefits that the products bring AND dispose of them in an environmentally sustainable way.

Before LifeCycle, hygiene waste could either be incinerated or sent to landfill. Neither option is ideal

Burning wet waste is expensive because more energy is needed to heat it before it can burn. The other option is to send it to landfill. But current estimates are that within a decade, our landfill sites will be full.

Be part of the revolution... Choose phs

With LifeCycle, we can divert hygiene waste away from landfill and, through our patented process, make it dry enough to recover energy from it in the form of Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) - and we can do it on an industrial scale.

It’s cost effective and environmentally sustainable

Where is phs LifeCycle?

phs LifeCycle is ideally located in the West Midlands to process all our customer’s hygiene waste products.

Can I send my hygiene waste products to phs LifeCycle?

If you’re a phs hygiene waste customer, we’ll be processing your hygiene waste products at our LifeCycle plant this year. Since November 2016, we’ve began to process the waste from our customers in Wales and England into RDF and we’ll be increasing the amount we recycle as we ramp up our capability through 2017.

Our target is zero to landfill by the end of 2017

...for the hygeine waste that comes from our customers

What is Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) and how does it work?

Refuse Derived Fuel is a term used to describe fuel produced from waste that has undergone some sort of process. Materials for recycling and non-combustible materials, such as glass and metals, are removed before the waste is processed.

RDF can be used in a variety of ways

It can produce electricity and heat for homes and businesses and is often used alongside traditional sources of fuel, to power industry. Using non-recyclable waste as a fuel also helps us to reduce our reliance on traditional fossil fuels such as coal.

RDF is made up of domestic waste which includes:

Biodegradable materials as well as plastics. With LifeCycle, this consists of nappies, sanitary waste and incontinence products that would otherwise be incinerated or sent to landfill. Instead, we convert it into energy.
